How Does Trash, Recycling and Bulk Pickup Work in The Woodlands, TX?

Trash and recycling bins lined up at the curb of a suburban street in morning light

In The Woodlands, Texas, trash and recycling are collected by Waste Management under a contract with The Woodlands Township, and the township calls it a courtesy service with no separate bill to residents. Your pickup day depends on your address. Bulky items like an old sofa are booked by phone with Waste Management, and when you buy a resale home, the service simply carries over to you.

That is the short version. The longer version matters most in the first two weeks after closing, when you are buried in moving boxes and trying to figure out why your neighbor’s cart is out and yours is not.

Who Runs It, and Who Pays

The Woodlands is not a city. It is governed by The Woodlands Township, which provides many city-style services, and trash is one of them. If that setup is new to you, our piece on what The Woodlands Township actually is walks through it.

Because the township funds the contract, you will not get a separate trash bill from Waste Management. That cost is part of the township budget, which comes back to the township property tax on your home. It is one more reason the township board races matter to homeowners, and our article on the 2026 township board election explains what the board controls.

One caution before you count on any of this. A Woodlands-area mailing address does not always mean an address inside the township. Some nearby communities use the name and run their own service. Plug the exact address into the township’s collection schedule lookup before you assume anything.

The Numbers to Save in Your Phone

  • Waste Management customer service: 800-800-5804. Missed pickups, cart repair or replacement, and bulky pickups.
  • Township Environmental Services: 281-210-3800. For a problem Waste Management has not fixed.
  • Your pickup days: the township’s address lookup, linked above. Schedules vary across The Woodlands, so your old house’s routine does not carry over.

These come from the township’s own trash and recycling FAQ, checked in October 2026.

Moving Week Is When This Gets Real

Most people learn the bulky rules the hard way, with a pile of broken-down boxes and a mattress on the curb.

Here is how it works. The township’s standard cart is 96 gallons. If you have more trash than fits, you can buy an extra service tag for each additional bag, $2.10 per tag as of October 2026, with each bag under 40 pounds. Tags are sold at township offices and at the customer service desks of the Kroger stores in Cochran’s Crossing, Alden Bridge and Sterling Ridge.

Bulky waste means anything too large to fit in your empty cart with the lid closed. Furniture and appliances count. Construction debris does not, so if you are pulling out carpet or a vanity, plan on a hauler or a dumpster. A refrigerator has to be certified free of freon before it goes out.

To schedule a bulky pickup, call Waste Management. An older township move-in guide said to call two business days before your service day. I would call earlier than that during moving season and confirm the timing on the phone.

Cardboard is the other moving-week surprise. Breaking boxes down flat and putting them in recycling gets them gone without buying a pile of tags. Our moving day survival kit has the rest of the first-day list, and trash bags are on it for a reason.

What Goes in the Recycling Cart

Per the township’s list, curbside recycling takes:

  • Newspaper, junk mail and office paper
  • Corrugated cardboard and paperboard
  • Aluminum and tin food cans
  • Juice, soup and milk cartons
  • Plastics numbered 1 through 5 and 7
  • Glass bottles and jars

Household chemicals and hazardous waste never go in either cart. The township points residents to county and regional disposal sites for those, and it runs The Woodlands Recycling Center for township residents who want to drop items off.

Holidays, Storms and the First Month

Waste Management does not collect in The Woodlands on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day or New Year’s Day, and the township posts the shifted days in advance. With Thanksgiving a few weeks out, that is worth a glance if you are closing in November.

After a big storm, the township coordinates with Waste Management and posts updates on its website and social media. Storm debris pickup is its own operation, so watch for those notices instead of piling limbs out on your regular day.

We have helped buyers settle into The Woodlands for more than 20 years, Peter since he was licensed in 2004, and we keep the township’s numbers on the move-in sheet we hand clients at closing for exactly this reason. It is a small thing until the boxes are stacked to the ceiling. The Move Live Love TX Team™ is a husband-and-wife real estate team based in The Woodlands, serving Houston and the surrounding areas.
